Office of University Compliance

Columbia University has established the Office of University Compliance within the Office of the General Counsel. This office coordinates Columbia’s numerous existing compliance efforts and provides senior leadership with a comprehensive view of the University’s compliance activities. The Office of University Compliance does not assume the duties of the various substantive compliance areas, and all ongoing compliance activities continue in their existing reporting structures. Rather, this office’s role is to coordinate these efforts and assess University-wide performance.

Columbia’s Commitment to Compliance and Ethics

Columbia University is committed to operating with integrity in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies. The University expects the highest standards of ethical conduct from the members of its community and is dedicated to upholding its reputation as one of the top academic and research institutions in the world.

Columbia expects members of the University community to inform the appropriate contacts if they have observed unethical, illegal, or suspicious activity. Those who have concerns about possible noncompliance with federal, state, or local laws and regulations or University policies are expected to report promptly. The University prohibits retaliation against individuals who report or seek guidance on possible ethical or compliance issues in good faith.

The University Compliance Program

The University Compliance Program consists of an Executive Compliance Committee, University Compliance Committee, and a University Compliance Network with representatives from across the University. Additional information is available within the "Program" section of this website.

The University Compliance Program provides a centralized focus that permits the sharing of best practices and distributes recent developments to compliance contacts across the University. For employees, it is a single point of contact to find compliance information. For the compliance community, it provides a forum for raising awareness on compliance activities around the University.
